What made you want to come to Mulberry UTC after being home-educated?
J: At the start, it was mainly for my GCSEs as I needed somewhere to do them, but then I realized I was struggling in a few subjects so it was a great way to get more detail and get better so I’m ready for my GCSEs and can hopefully get a high grade in them, which I definitely think the school has helped me with. It’s a great environment and there are so many opportunities, especially in science like the STEM Academy, which I’ve joined and is really great.
Which technical subjects do you do?
J: I do Media and Performing Arts. For Media I’ve already started my coursework; we’ve done the planning and now we’re starting our comic which was our brief, so I’ve started working on that. For Performing Arts, we’ve done a performance and are moving on to more written coursework, then we’re going to be moving into more opportunities where you can choose what you want to do.
Do you like those subjects?
J: Definitely, they’re two of my favorite subjects in school. I really enjoy the more practical side of things.
How was the transition from being educated to coming to Mulberry UTC?
J: It was quite rough at the start, but then it got really nice because everyone was so welcoming. All the teachers were so lovely. It didn’t make you feel like you were out of place, which is really nice. I think it’s great to be able to have more people my age where I was kind of lacking that being home educated. There were a lot of people younger than me who I was working with. So it’s been really really great and the teachers really helped with that.
What kinds of challenges did you face transitioning, and how did you overcome them?
J: Because I was home educated, I was never sat down for too long, so it’s quite different. I always needed to take breaks to stand or do something. So I’ve spoken to most of my teachers about how I might need to stand up for a minute and take a little walk around, so they’re really great at giving me something to do like hand out books, so I can stand up, which is really great. Everyone’s really understanding, which is really great.
What is the best thing about Mulberry UTC?
J: How there are so many opportunities and so many different ways you can go from one school, whereas I know most schools focus on one specific thing. I think it’s really great that every teacher will help you achieve what you want to achieve and will think really highly of you and think you can get the highest grades, which for me especially really helped me try and go for those higher grades.
